This is an illustration of Seamus Heaney’s poem 'The Death of The Naturalist'. The image was commissioned by BBC Country File Magazine to illustrate an editorial feature written by Candida Lycett Green, the daughter of John Betjeman. In the poem Heaney describes the boy becoming aware that nature is a powerful thing, that the boy in the poem becomes strongly aware of the environment around him, the noise of the frogs, the smell of the flax dam. In the print I have tried to convey the bubbling pool the boy observed.
