Curlew at Whitby is based on a memory of my youth when I spent time in North Yorkshire. In my 20's I went everywhere on a bicycle and completed a number of long journeys. A regular trip was cycling from Ampleforth (where my mother was living ) to Whitby. There was no more welcome sight than that of the abby on the cliffs as you came down from the long ride across the always windy moors.
