It is hard to think of any of our British birds more beautiful and striking than the Goldfinch. Last winter I watched them stripping the red berries from our neighbours holly bush; it was just the most beautiful thing to witness. The striking bright red face, yellow wing patch and golden brown body of the birds against the greens and reds of the winter holly was a delight. Too soon they were off, in a blurr of dipping flight.
