Stiffkey in North Norfolk is a charming coastal village I have visited many times with my partner Mark. It was Mark who told me the story of the Rector of Stiffkey, which was the inspiration for this print. The vicar, Harold Davidson born 1875, met a most unusual death. Despite being based in Norfolk he made regular trips to London to help the ladies of the night in his missionary work. During this time it was alleged he behaved in an unfit manner for a vicar and was defrocked by the church. With his job gone, he used his notoriety gained from this episode to work with a travelling circus and became 'Daniel in the Lions Den'. This was until he stepped on the tail of a Lion called Freddie, who grabbed him by the neck, shuck him and sadly he died a few days later. He is buried in the graveyard at Stiffkey.
